We linked a recycling project with the creation of a large mural
Students took home an individual invite to bring their used bottles and tops into school. The idea was to create a colourful mural from the tops of bottles and jars.
We look for opportunities to encourage thinking and free choice throughout all age groups. So began the discussion about what sort of picture to create. The summer holidays were approaching and many students were looking forward to going to the sea, the beach and swimming. It was therefore decided to design an underwater scene. Firstly in their sketchbooks and later on scaled paper students were asked to draw their underwater scene. Using pencil and then their choice of pen, pencils and pastels they set to work.
The students responded eagerly bringing in pockets and bags full of bottle tops many exclaiming at the number of tops they could easily find and excavating still more from the school field during recess time. A simple catorgorizing and sorting activity, ideal for this 5 year group began with organizing all the tops by colour. It was soon apparent that blue was not an option as the children identified light and dark blue and another suggested turquoise as a possible criteria. Various boxes were collected from the recycling depot and all the tops then organized by colour.
We had discussed several different ways to attach the bottle tops, websites we consulted suggested screwing each top onto the plywood. Finally we decided due to the artwork being displayed inside and trying to keep the students as fully integrated in the process as possible to use a hot glue gun.
