The children love this activity, drawing plans in their sketchbooks, then spending three or four weeks to complete the artwork. I buy pre-stretched 30 cm by 30 cm frames - oh the anticipation and excitement is palatable. They choose different techniques to sketch the outline onto their canvas, some preferring free hand whilst others trace an image using the overhead projector. Then they carefully apply the outline liner to the fabric. This is a difficult and messy business for eight year olds especially if the liner is in metal tubes which is all I can get here in Azerbaijan. However there are very few mistakes as the children concentrate so hard. After letting the liner dry, if applied correctly it forms a barrier on the material allowing fabric paint colors to sit side by side and not bleed into each other. The children experiment with layers of color to create shade and depth before adding more liner as pattern decoration.
